Background of the Study
Women’s participation in political leadership is essential for achieving gender equality and inclusive governance. In Uyo Local Government Area, Akwa Ibom State, historical underrepresentation of women in political roles has raised concerns about persistent gender disparities in decision-making processes (Adebayo, 2023). This study examines the factors influencing women's access to political leadership positions, exploring barriers such as cultural biases, limited educational opportunities, and systemic political discrimination (Okon, 2024). The research further evaluates the impact of women’s political involvement on policy outcomes and community development, considering both formal and informal pathways to leadership. By analyzing the role of political parties, advocacy groups, and legislative reforms, the study aims to provide insights into the challenges and opportunities for enhancing women's representation in political leadership (Eze, 2025).

Statement of the Problem
Despite various initiatives to promote gender equality, women in Uyo continue to face significant barriers to accessing political leadership (Olu, 2023). Cultural stereotypes, systemic discrimination, and limited opportunities for political engagement contribute to persistent underrepresentation, hindering inclusive governance and equitable policy development. This study seeks to identify the factors impeding women’s political participation and propose strategies that can effectively address these challenges, thereby improving gender balance in political leadership and fostering more inclusive decision-making processes (Ike, 2024).

Objectives of the Study:

To assess the current state of women’s political participation in Uyo.

To identify barriers hindering access to political leadership for women.

To recommend strategies for increasing women’s representation in political roles.

Research Questions:

What is the level of women’s access to political leadership in Uyo?

What factors inhibit women’s political participation?

How can policy and societal changes improve women’s access to leadership positions?

Research Hypotheses:

Women face significant structural barriers to political leadership.

Cultural stereotypes negatively affect women’s political participation.

Policy interventions promoting gender equality will enhance women’s access to leadership roles.

Significance of the Study
This study is significant as it addresses the persistent gender gap in political leadership in Uyo. The findings will inform policy reforms and advocacy initiatives aimed at promoting greater gender equality in political representation, ultimately leading to more inclusive governance and community development (Ogunleye, 2025).

Scope and Limitations of the Study:
Limited to the topic only.

Definitions of Terms:

Political leadership: Positions of authority and decision-making in governance.

Gender equality: Equal access to opportunities and resources regardless of gender.

Underrepresentation: The condition in which a group is represented in numbers disproportionately low compared to their population.
